The Mountaineers Books is
accepting applications for ten-week internships
available throughout the year. We offer Editorial/Acquisitions,
Production, Sales, Marketing, Marketing Graphic
Design, and Publicity internships. Mountaineers
Books interns attend department meetings, work
closely with top editors and department heads,
and gain hands-on experience at one of the nation's
leading outdoor-oriented publishers.
Duration
& Compensation
The internship is part-time and unpaid. We prefer
that interns commit to working ten hours per week
for ten weeks, although we will try to accommodate
conflicting schedules.
Qualifications
Most successful applicants have studied a subject
related to the desired internship for at least
one to two years in college, or possess equivalent
experience and skills. However, we encourage all
of those with a strong interest in book publishing—and
a desire to learn and work hard—to apply.
Application
To apply, email a letter, resume, and work samples
to the appropriate email address. The most promising
candidates will be contacted by phone and invited
to interview.
Programs
Along with the general requirements, each of our
internships each has specific qualifications and
duties.
Editorial/Acquisitions Duties
Researching competitive titles and new topics,
applying for copyrights, searching for potential
authors, managing unsolicited manuscripts, updating
the photo/slide library, and maintaining agent
and photographer databases.
Requirements
Interns must be proficient in Microsoft Word and
Excel, adept at Internet research, comfortable
making cold calls, and possess excellent writing
skills.

sales literature, and development.
Requirements
Interns must be Internet-literate and have a minimum
of two years of college experience—preferably
with an emphasis in marketing—and possess
good writing skills, attention to detail, and
a fertile imagination.
Marketing Graphic

Design print materials for advertisements and
mailings, generate web site graphics, and convert
images to specific file types.
Requirements
Interns must have one and a half years of experience
in a graphic design program and be proficient
in Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Freehand.
Publicity Duties
Write press releases and publicity-related web
content, update media database, research niche
media, identify media and corporate web sites
to approach for review coverage and excerpts,
attend marketing meetings, assist in clerical
duties.

school or work schedule but should be scheduled
in daily increments of three hours or more with
a minimum of eight hours per week for ten weeks.
Requirements
Interns must possess strong writing and phone
skills, be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel,
and adept at Internet research. Experience with
Quark or PageMaker is a plus. Two years of college
