Biography: AUTHOR HOMETOWN: Sebastopol, CA AUTHOR WEBSITE: http://www.backroad.users.sonic.net/index.html http://bikecal.com/index.asp AUTHOR BIO: Bill Oetinger was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, but has lived all of his adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been cycling for all of that adult life, rolling out-so far-well over 200,000 miles. For 20 years, Oetinger has been the Ride Director and Newsletter Editor for the Santa Rosa Cycling Club, one of the larger bike clubs in California. In that capacity, he has planned and coordinated thousands of rides around the Bay Area. Further afield, he has organized 25 one-week tours for the club: almost 200 stages scattered throughout California and Oregon, as well as in Utah, France, and Italy. (For the tour participants, he prepares descriptive previews of each stage, similar to the write-ups for each ride in this volume. Many of those previews-and maps and profiles-have been made available to the public at his Adventure Velo website; see first address above.) Since 1992, Oetinger has been either Chair or Co-chair of the prestigious Terrible Two Double Century, one of the most challenging one-day rides in America. (It covers 200 miles in Sonoma Country, 16,000 feet in elevation gain, and was started in 1976!) He has completed many double centuries and over 350 centuries. Long, hard rides aside, he is happiest knocking off a 60-mile tour stage with his friends. Oetinger has been writing a monthly column at BikeCal.com since 1999, ranging across the full spectrum of bike topics, from touring to racing to advocacy. (Over 160 columns are archived at the site.) He lives with his wife Kathy on a rural acre outside the little town of Sebastopol, Sonoma County, 60 miles north of the Golden Gate…prime cycling country.
